When in Rome…

You gotta go Thriftin’ on Thursday.

I was with my Mom Thursday morning so we had to hit her obscenely fantastic thrift shop.  Really unfair that she has that at her fingertips.  She found a trailer sized basket and I found these goodies.  Part of my stash was some glass canisters with ugly wood lids that I still need to paint but I have been wanting to slowly but surely change all my spice and cooking plastic containers to pretty (er) glass ones, I got five containers in all and that inspired to me go to town on my spice cupboard today.  A project that should have taken forty-five minutes took 2.5 hours thanks to my kids who insisted on “helping” me.   Aidan was in his glory with empty spice jars and corn meal.  He did his Swedish Chef routine and stood on his “standing stool” for forty-five minutes dumping corn meal and residual chipotle back and forth from empty jar to empty jar.

Content to make a mess.

The kids found a cork and spit it back and forth to each other, squealing with delight!
This is the first step to making the cupboard pretty enough to take the doors off of like the ones to the left of the stove.
Anyways, I don’t want to take away from the post I did this morning but I promised Mom I would post my treasures…

Copper Rooster Accessory

Throw pillow that was MADE for my bedroom

Vintage globe (Vintage meaning: One Germany, Yugoslavia and the USSR)

Before

After: The Cocoa is in a “Le Parfait” made in Reims, France jar that I found with Mom.

After: My decorating sprinkles.

After: Ball jars showcasing my spices. Front row L-R, Chili Powder, Chipotle, Cayenne and Curry!

After! Now, I know this could get categorized under O.C.D., anal retentive, board…but in my book it is sheer ecstacy! You’ve got to enlarge this to REALLY appreciate it!

I love your finds. It’s so funny, this morning I myself woke up with the anal retentive motion of spray painting the tops of all my ball jars for use in my pantry. Mission accomplished 🙂

OHh….nothin’s cuter, kids playin’ in the kitchen while mom’s workin’ up a storm…my little ones used to like to be right with me on projects and help and I can’t tell you the satisfaction of a little one playing with measuring cups or stirring something concocted with cornmeal in a little mixing bowl! Your cupboards look GREAT and you little chicks are the CUTEST! (I went thrifting yesterday, too…and I put my stuff up. It’s not quite as cool as yours. That pillow is perfect!)

I have too, too many spices (did I just say that???), but have been thinking about taking the ones most often used (cumin, rosemary, thyme, etc.) and putting them in my vintage canning jars. I may just have to do that today, as we have the blizzard from hell hitting us, which means this mama ain’t leavin’ the homefront!

Looooove the blue finish on your book cabinet. Any chance you’d post a tutorial on how to achieve that aged finish (on my tiny budget)?
