In Search of Plaid Taffeta

Nov 28, 2011 | Fashion | 17 comments

I have this vision for our Christmas outfits… well, not yours but for my girls and I.
I’m thinking long, floor length skirts for them and for me too.
For me, my vision is a long skirt, with a slight but dramatic nonetheless train and a super starched white shirt… you know, something along the lines of a Carolina Herrera number.

I want to make them out of plaid taffeta.

I guess I must be out of gourd because every store I go in looks at me like I am speaking Swahili when I ask for plaid taffeta.  As if this is some alien, bizarre request on November 27th.  I am so frustrated.  I can see these outfits in my head!!!  I’ve got tunnel vision and I’m not going to be satisfied until I can create them.
Can’t you see it?  Cumberbun style belts, the girls in patent leather peeping out from decadently long taffeta… me dripping is some serious Marie Antoinette style blingage against the simplicity of a white blouse???

I thought I had hit the jackpot yesterday online.  I found emerald and sapphire plaid taffeta which wasn’t my first choice but it was gorgeous and it would have been SO in style with the whole gem colors thing going on this fall/winter on the runways.

“This item is no longer available”

The only thing I can find is so bright and tacky looking.  It looks like it’s a bolt left over from 1983.  I guess I can’t quite describe what I am looking for, I just don’t want it to look cheap.
So here, dear readers where you come in…
If you stumble across some pretty plaid taffeta (I am not picky, it can be poly or silk) would you let me know??
I hate having an idea that I am in love with only to find myself vexed at every turn.

Oh, and what is your Christmas ensemble going to look like?
‘Tis the season to go for it…non?

Try – it’s a warehouse near St. Louis and you can find almost anything there. I’ve had great luck ordering from them and the prices are great.

  2. Alice

You might want to try the word ‘Tartan’ in the search as well.

Your vision sounds lovely. Good luck!

  3. Carolyne

Lots of decorator fabrics in taffeta or silk blends (read: curtain fabric or pillow tops) on eBay. Robert Allen makes wonderful silk plaids.

I will be wearing anything that is comfortably understated as I will be having surgery on 12/22…my daughter, all less than a month shy of 18 at that point, will be everything lovely and ravishing in a sleeveless black velvet, just above the knee dress complete with a pearl neckline embellishment. She will be gorgeous:)

I SO understand your dilemma! I have found wandering with NO vision and taking my cue from what I AM able to find is less frustrating! It does look like quite a few comments have some promising suggestions. I can’t wait to see what you create!

  8. The Path Traveled

I still have a photo of my Christmas dress which was plaid red and green taffeta. I loved it. I hope you find some somewhere. Have you tried ebay, perhaps someone has some old material.

  9. Texas Mom

Last year, I decorated for Christmas with plaid accents~this year, I am adding to them. Can’t wait to see your skirts! 🙂

Finding the right fabric can be a nightmare!! I spent two weeks deciding upon fabrics, colors and dress styles for my two girls. I ended up with a sapphire blue taffeta and grey wool capes. Hopefully I will get them done in time for Christmas! I ended up ordering on-line from fashion fabrics as no stores near me had anything worth purchasing.

May I suggest looking for plaid dupioni silk? The kind intended for home dec is 54″ and has generally has more body to it than the kind intended for fashions and would subsequently drape more like taffeta. You can find solids for about $13 a yard but the plaid would be a bit more. Taffeta is tough…I feel I understand the look you are aiming for though. Very very hard to find I am afraid.
Or, how about a blouse done in silk, dupioni again, and a long wool plaid skirt? Ohhh..and french cuffs with antique cuff links! 🙂 And a big rich black velvet bow in your chignon. 🙂 Thank you for humoring me with the opportunity to express my fashion opinions!

Hi there.. I did a quick search for you on Ebay.. and oh gosh.. quite a few to pick from.. my fav is the black/cream and the cream with black flocking.. stunning and not too expensive.. happy sewing.. pic please..

  13. Stephanie

I can picture it. It sounds so pretty. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out. No matter what fabric you choose, it’s a very good idea and will translate well.

  14. Victoria

I was going to suggest denver fabrics also. It’s where I ended up getting the dupioni silk for my bridesmaids dresses.

Did you know my original plan for the wedding was with plaid taffeta bridesmaids dresses? In poppy colors, no less. Imagine trying to find THAT combo in winter. Hmm.. you see how well that turned out. Good luck! I’ll be on the lookout for other shops.. what colors DO you want?
