What to do in the Garden Before Winter – Find Out!

What to do in the Garden Before Winter

What to do in the Garden Before Winter?

Gotcha.

This isn’t your typical gardening post.

No, no… come back! Read on!

It’s a fun one!

I mean, come on. We all pretty much can figure out.

What to do in the garden before winter.

You can let it lie till spring or you can yank it all out and amend the soil. (That’s the nutshell, for more click here).

The frost was coming but the day was GORGEOUS. I only wanted to be outside but my sweet Hoolie kept bugging me to come inside and play Barbies. (Yes, we play Barbies in this house. More on that if you want.) But going up to her (messy) bedroom was the LAST thing I wanted to do. After all, I had just built the coolest Barbie apartments in their hutch yesterday… couldn’t I just be outside???

So, I made her a deal. I said, “Tell you what, bring your Barbies outside and we’ll play “Garden Barbie”.  They haven’t made one of those yet have they???

“Playing” for me always requires some exercise in creativity. It’s hard for me to make make-believe voices and imagine scenarios… but boy, I love to be creative. (Thus the cabinet Barbie apartments of yesterday). I sat in the gravel of the potager while I waited for her. She brought out a couple of plastic, well-endowed gals and I did my best to say, “Hi, what’s your name?” and all those make-believe conversations… it got quiet… cause I suck at small talk (yes, in make-believe AND real life) but these nasturtium leaves were calling me… as was my inner Elie Saab.

One manipulated leaf led to another and I hollered for Hoolie to run to the herb garden and grab me some chives… I needed some thread! Layer after layer and giggle after giggle… I was flying high and soon I had an audience of daughters begging me to make one for their Barbie. We had SOOOOOO much fun “designing” with what was left of our fall potager garden. Nasturtium leaves led to Love Lies Bleeding blooms and those led to Kale skirts! More fun than anyone should have while sitting in pea gravel. Once we got them all designed and tied up with plenty of chives it was time for a serious fashion shoot in the herb garden… in the shadow of the fountain.

What to do in the Garden Before Winter

What started off with a sigh…. cause shame on me… I wasn’t really in the mood to “play”, ended up to be a riot of a time with my little girls and I doubt they will ever forget the day we prepped the garden for winter by playing Barbies.

Thanks for reading. Angela Parisienne Farmgirl

  1. I love Nasturtium Barbie!! And I love how you play Barbies with your girls. I don’t remember a single Barbie conversation that I had while playing with my older sister, because that isn’t how we played. Playing Barbies consisted of dressing and undressing them in every outfit they owned, and then creating a “Barbie house”. We didn’t have the Barbie Dreamhouse, or the Barbie car, or any of the other “accessories sold separately.” What we did have was our creativity. Books became sofas, Jar lids on top of a spool of thread became tables and so on. I particularly remember a Barbie swingset that my sister made out of Tinkertoys. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories.

  2. This is THE BEST! Thank you for the gentle reminder to make the most of my fleeting time with children.
And by the way, the Barbies look pretty darn good! You may have missed your calling for edible clothing fashion design. 😉
